What is your management/work philosophy?

After all these years, I have learned to constantly question myself. Managing is almost like starting over every day. It’s very important to not deviate from your strategy. You have to be open to new trends in the world, but you can’t forget your basic philosophy. We, for example, only invest in EBITDA-positive companies. Not giving in to the pressure of the environment is very important and holding on to your strong convictions is a plus. You learn that through experience.

What is your favourite professional memory?

In 2021 I already invested in Melexis shares at a price of 13 euro. The price did not move for a year until the share was discovered. Unless a share is heavily overvalued or operates in an extremely negative macro environment, you do not have to sell a well-run company too soon. Besides that, I look back at the very strong performance of our Nagelmackers small & mid cap fund in 2021 with great pride. The good teamwork of our team and the strong convictions led to a result of 35 percent.

What is your worst experience?

The banking crisis and all its consequences for the markets in 2008 made it a painful year. Fraud cases such as LHSP are also painful experiences, although I was no longer a part of it. It undermines the general confidence in the financial markets.

Which challenges are you facing the next 12 months?

Every year comes with unexpected situations. Following the market daily and respond to emerging situations is always a challenge. Every fund manager has to remain openminded regarding new developments, but without forgetting their basic principles.
